You have most probably already read or seen the news on the television of the new 1 in 2 cancer facts. Yes you did read that correctly, 1 in 2 of us will develop cancer at some stage in our lives. It is a fairly grim fact but let’s not forget that cancer survival rates have doubled in the last 40 years. Cancer Research UK released the news this week and they warned of a crisis within the NHS if we did not begin to plan ahead. So with these new figures being released, what can we do to protect the ones we love should the worst news suddenly arrive in our own lives? We discuss the latest figures in this article and we start to think about life insurance in a totally new way.
Age is the biggest risk factor for disease and the very fact that we are living longer means that the figures on cancer are changing. This is the biggest reason the figures are changing. However, Andy Bird, our Life Insurance Protection Specialist at Bright says, “Cancer is not fussy, it can happen to anyone, sadly”. We should always look at our own lifestyle as there are many other factors that are heavily linked with illness, such as not having a balanced diet, not enough exercise, smoking, drinking too much, tanning, obesity, to name a few. But what if life insurance began to help us think differently about all of these things? Many life insurance companies are now offering incentives to customers when they take out life insurance, such as gym memberships and cinema vouchers. This offering from life insurance companies is to encourage a healthier lifestyle and it is a really positive step forwards to a healthier thinking you!
We often think of life insurance as a way of protecting the ones we love should anything happen to us. Rightly so, this is exactly what it is for. Quite often, life insurance is the last thing on our minds. ‘Planning a policy can wait’, is what most of us think. ‘It is not top of my list’ is probably the reason many do not take out life insurance. This is simply because in general we like to deal with the brighter, happier things in life. Strangely enough, we insure our pets more than we do ourselves. I bet you didn’t expect to read that today! I for one am a dog lover, but this fact still astonishes me.
With the new incentives from life insurance companies, life insurance can now take on a new meaning. It can be a way in which we can protect those we love should the worst happen, and a way in which we can begin to think about our lifestyle in a more positive way. It can encourage us and remind us that it is important to think about our health and our lifestyle.
- 1 in 4 people die from cancer in the UK.
- Eventually this will have major implications on the NHS.
- The single biggest thing that can help a patient survive cancer is by finding it early enough.
Read the last three sentences again and you will see that it does not take a mathematician to realise the potential problems we may have to face in the near future.
